iPhone 18 Pro: What Apple Actually Shipped

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max on 9 September 2026 and both are on sale now. The long-rumoured split launch was confirmed: there is no standard iPhone 18 this autumn. Specifications below come from Apple’s own pages.

Short answer

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max on 9 September 2026 and both are on sale now, from $1,199 and $1,299 respectively. Both run the A20 Pro chip and come in 256GB to 2TB, in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.

The headline change is the camera: the 48MP Fusion Main now has a mechanically variable aperture with four settings from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4.0, the first iPhone not to use a fixed aperture. Apple also confirmed the long-rumoured split launch — there is no standard iPhone 18 this autumn, only the Pro models, alongside the new iPhone Duo.

The split launch is real

For years the pattern was one September event covering the whole iPhone line. That changed. Apple's current lineup is the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone 16 — there is no non-Pro iPhone 18. The standard models are expected in spring 2027.

The practical consequence for buyers: if you buy Pro phones, September is still your moment. If you buy the standard iPhone, the autumn event no longer has anything for you, and your options right now are last year's iPhone 17 or waiting until spring. That is a real change in how to plan an upgrade, and it is the part of this launch most likely to catch people out.

The camera is the actual upgrade

Variable aperture

Every iPhone until now had a fixed aperture; software simulated depth-of-field effects. The 18 Pro's main camera moves between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0 mechanically. Wide open it gathers more light and throws the background out of focus optically; stopped down it holds more of the scene sharp. Apple also exposes pro controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a live histogram.

Opening drawn to relative scale — aperture diameter is proportional to 1/ƒ-number, so ƒ/1.48 admits roughly 7× the light of ƒ/4.0. Every previous iPhone had a single fixed aperture. Source: Apple technical specifications.

Reach

The telephoto is a 48MP Fusion at 100 mm (4x) with a tetraprism design and 3D sensor-shift stabilisation, which also enables a 12MP optical-quality 8x at 200 mm. Combined with 2x optical zoom out, Apple describes a 16x optical-quality zoom range, with digital zoom to 40x.

How to judge this: variable aperture and optical reach are capabilities software cannot replicate. Almost everything else in this generation — the chip, the display, the build — is an increment. If you do not care about photography, this is a small update wearing a big one's clothes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 18 Pro out?

Yes. Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on 9 September 2026 and both are available to buy now. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299.

Is there a standard iPhone 18?

Not this autumn. Apple's current lineup is the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone 16 — there is no non-Pro iPhone 18. Apple has split its annual launch, with the standard models expected to follow in spring 2027.

What is the variable aperture camera?

The iPhone 18 Pro's 48MP Fusion Main camera has a mechanically variable aperture with four settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. Every previous iPhone had a fixed aperture. A wider aperture gathers more light with shallower depth of field; a narrower one keeps more of the scene sharp. It is a genuine optical change rather than a software effect.

What chip is in the iPhone 18 Pro?

The A20 Pro: a 6-core CPU with 2 super cores and 4 efficiency cores, a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, a dual 16-core Neural Engine, and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. The same chip is in the iPhone Duo.

How good is the zoom on the iPhone 18 Pro?

Apple lists a 16x optical-quality zoom range — 8x optical-quality zoom in and 2x optical zoom out — with digital zoom to 40x. That comes from a 48MP Fusion Telephoto at 100 mm (4x) using a tetraprism design, which also enables a 12MP optical-quality 8x at 200 mm.

What sizes do the iPhone 18 Pro models come in?

The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch display and weighs 211 grams. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display and weighs 249 grams. Both are 8.75 mm deep with an aluminium unibody design, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back.

Does the iPhone 18 Pro still have the Dynamic Island?

Yes. Apple's specifications list Dynamic Island on both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Reports before the launch suggested it had been reduced in size; Apple does not publish a measurement, so treat any specific figure as unverified.

Should I upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro?

The camera is the reason to, and the only one that is clearly a generational change. If you photograph a lot, the variable aperture and the 16x optical-quality zoom range are real capabilities you cannot get in software. If you mostly use your phone for messaging, maps and the web, a recent Pro will not feel slow next to it.
