Nearly every AI website builder advertises a free plan. Very few of them will put a real site, on your own domain, in front of customers without payment. Here is the honest breakdown.
Almost every “free” AI website builder is free to build with, not free to launch. The common pattern is that you can generate a complete site, preview it, and edit it at no cost — but publishing it puts it on the vendor's subdomain (like yourbusiness.builder.com) with their branding somewhere on the page. Connecting your own domain and removing that branding is the paid step, typically starting between $5 and $19 a month.
A smaller group of builders will not publish at all on a free plan; the free tier is effectively an extended preview. Free is genuinely sufficient if you need a link to share, are validating an idea, or are still deciding. It is not sufficient if you are a real business asking customers to trust you — a builder-branded subdomain signals “unfinished” to exactly the people you want to convert.
There are three genuinely different things vendors all call “free”, and the difference matters more than any feature list:
| Type of free plan | What you can do | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Free forever, publishes | Build and launch a live, public site at no cost | Vendor subdomain and vendor branding on your pages; custom domain is paid |
| Free trial, time-limited | Full paid features for a set window | The site comes down, or reverts, when the trial ends |
| Free to build only | Generate, preview and edit the whole site | Nothing goes live until you subscribe |
When you compare builders, establish which of these three you are looking at before you compare anything else. A generous feature list on a plan that never publishes is not a free website.
If you are putting the link on a business card, a van, an invoice, or a Google Business Profile, the subdomain is a real cost even though it is priced at zero. If the link only ever gets pasted into a chat to three friends for feedback, it costs you nothing.
A free plan without a custom domain means no [email protected]. For service businesses that quote by email, this is usually the thing that forces the upgrade, not the website itself.
Export options vary a lot and are rarely advertised. Before investing hours writing page content inside a builder, check whether you can get that text and those images back out. This matters more on free plans, which are the ones people abandon.
Some free tiers discourage or block search engine indexing. If your reason for having a site is being found on Google, a plan that cannot be indexed defeats the purpose entirely. Check this explicitly — it is often buried in plan comparison footnotes.
Because generating a site is free almost everywhere, the most efficient approach is to run the same brief through several tools and compare the actual output rather than the marketing:
Use free plans the way they are actually good: as a no-risk way to compare the output of several AI builders on your own business brief, in one sitting. That is real value and it costs nothing.
Then budget for the entry paid tier of whichever tool wrote the best first draft. Across the builders we track, that is typically $5–$19 a month plus roughly $10–$20 a year for the domain — less than most businesses spend on a single week of advertising.
XAIWebsites generates your complete business website — copy written for your business, mobile layout, and hosting — from a short questionnaire. Build and preview at no cost, and see the real output before you commit to anything.
Rarely from the builder itself. Most free plans publish to the vendor's own subdomain and charge to connect a custom domain. You would still need to buy the domain separately, typically $10 to $20 a year. Some hosting bundles include a free first-year domain with an annual plan, which is a discount rather than a genuinely free website.
Most do not run third-party advertising, but nearly all display their own branding — a badge, footer credit, or banner identifying the builder. That is the trade for the free tier. Removing it is almost always bundled into the first paid plan rather than sold separately.
Sometimes, but check before relying on it. Some free tiers restrict or discourage indexing, and a vendor subdomain carries none of the trust signals of your own domain. If being found in search is the reason you want a site, treat a custom domain as a requirement rather than an upgrade.
The site it generates usually is; the free plan's publishing terms usually are not. The quality of AI-generated drafts has improved sharply, and for a standard small-business site the output is often genuinely usable. The limitation is the branded subdomain and missing custom email, both of which affect how customers judge you.
Generate drafts free across two or three AI builders, pick the best output, then pay only for that tool's entry tier and a domain. That path typically lands between $70 and $250 for a full first year, including the domain, and avoids paying for a builder before seeing what it produces for your business.
